An old man's #morningroutine.

Hello, this is Kubo. I don't know if you want to know, but today I'm going to write about my morning routine. Don't you want to know what kind of morning a designer goes through? You want to know, right? Even if you don't want to know, I'll continue writing.

I wake up at 6:30 in the morning. I have two daughters, and currently I make lunch for the youngest while also making breakfast for my daughters. My partner and I take turns making lunch, but I do it myself two or three times a week. I love cooking, so making bento isn't a chore for me. It usually contains rice, meat or fish, tamagoyaki (rolled omelet) or potatoes (sometimes I use Anpanman potatoes), and vegetables. It also has three side dishes. Finally, I sprinkle yukari or sesame salt on the rice and it's done. It's not a character bento or anything like that, but I do value color.

Both my partner and I work in the fashion industry, so we've always dressed our daughters in stylish clothes. However, we've realized that we may have gone a little too far, so we let them choose their own lunch boxes. We have Snoopy or Hello Kitty designs. After making their lunch boxes, while they're eating, we take the dishes out of the dishwasher that we put in the night before and put them back in.

The TV broke about a year ago and has remained that way ever since. We don't play music, so the only sound at the breakfast table is the sound of my family chattering. I like TV, but lately I've been thinking that maybe we could do without it. I've come to prefer quiet mornings. At first, the kids would get sulky because the TV wouldn't work, but recently they've gotten used to it and no longer complain, and I'm talking to them more often, so it's been a good thing in the end. The kids seem to enjoy talking to their parents, too. Once my daughters are at school, I finally have some free time to myself. First, coffee. I drink two cups of "Roma," a Nespresso coffee maker and capsule set. I've tried almost every capsule, but I've settled on the strongest one. Lighting a cigarette and drinking a strong cup is refreshing. That's how I've been enjoying my morning coffee for the past 10 years or so. Now I'm gluten (wheat) free, so I only have a smoothie for breakfast. I hardly eat any carbohydrates anymore. As I get older, I feel it's important to limit things, so I've continued doing so.

I have a lot of indoor plants, so I water them about once a week. I keep an eye on the condition of the soil and give them just the right amount of water to prevent the roots from rotting, and I spray the leaves with a spray bottle. I leave the house around 9am, so I spend about two and a half hours after waking up like this. Routines may seem boring, but I think repeating the same thing every day is surprisingly important. In the world of work, things can be broadly divided into "projects" with deadlines and "routines" that continue on and on, but both are important and shouldn't be neglected. Even a simple morning routine should have some meaning. With that in mind, I repeat the same thing again the next day.
