Clothes are romantic, limited edition stories - Spring / Summer 2024 -

It's still cold in January as I write this article, but the seasons have already changed in the fashion industry. Yoshiokubo also began selling its 2024 Spring/Summer collection in February. [ Click here for the Lookbook]

The theme for yoshiokubo Spring/Summer 2024 is "Kondaku - Layered, swaying, refreshing clothing." Last year, we rented out Maxell Aqua Park Shinagawa for a one-night-only exhibition, which was well-received.

The reason why I chose an aquarium as the venue is because it best matched the theme. When you look at the thick glass of an aquarium from the side, you get a slightly distorted view, and the collection started with me wanting to express in clothing the subtle changes in color that occur due to that "overlap" or "refraction," the blurred feeling, and the illusionary worldview.

Of all the clothes that embody this collection theme, I think the most symbolic is the "ASSEMBLE TRENCH SHIRTS" that I will introduce today. This is a very elaborate piece, and I think it is a piece that symbolizes not only the collection but also the brand. So, I will explain the answer to the question, "What does this mean?"

One piece of clothing that can be used in three ways

The "ASSEMBLE TRENCH SHIRTS" originated from the idea of "what if we combined a trench coat with fishing wear?" and is a finished piece of outer shirt clothing. However, rather than being a single piece, it can be used in three different ways, as a "short-sleeved shirt," a "cotton and organza long-sleeved shirt," and a "shirt outer clothing made of different materials."

Let's introduce how to wear each one.

First, let's look at the appearance of the short-sleeved shirt alone. Based on a simple beige cotton shirt, accented with organza gun flaps, it is a piece that can be incorporated into daily outfits. This is also typical of yoshiokubo. The photo below shows this short-sleeved shirt with long-sleeve parts made of organdy attached, starting from the epaulettes (the areas on both shoulders where medals used to be worn). In this way, the bold use of different materials, cotton and organdy, creates an eye-catching "long-sleeve shirt." Furthermore, if you attach the mudguard hem to the bottom of the shirt with buttons and button the organza in the center, you'll have a one-of-a-kind trench shirt coat! The sleeves and front are made of elegant organza with a subdued sheen, and the top and bottom of the body are made of different materials, and they are detachable. I think this really shows the brand's unique style, and the way the clothes are combined to create three layers also expresses our identity.

You might think that this kind of design is based on adding on the short sleeves, but it's actually the other way around. I started with the silhouette of a trench coat, so the neckline is reminiscent of that, and is finished in a way that makes it "more like a trench coat than a shirt." This is also a key point.

We are currently introducing how to remove it on our official Instagram.

Clothes are romance, the romance of clothes

Clothes like the "ASSEMBLE TRENCH SHIRTS" are not often sold in general. However, I think this is the romance of clothing. I think it's important to embody the designer's own abilities and purely spontaneous ideas as clothing.

What's more, I think it's meaningful for yoshiokubo, who no longer participates in the so-called publicly known collections, to actually create the perfect balance of "a collection-like piece that can also be used daily." It's also "romantic" that a piece of clothing that is filled with such feelings reaches someone, provokes a reaction, and then the designer is inspired to create something new.

This is a limited edition piece, so I'm excited to see who will get it. I'd be so happy if someone who buys it posts it on Instagram! And I'd be so happy if this item becomes "a one-of-a-kind piece of clothing that you'll love and want to wear for a long time."
